About KD Sickle Cell Foundation

Born from a mother's love and a warrior's journey — learn the story behind our mission.

Our Story

A Mother's Love Became a Foundation's Mission

At just three months old, my son Kylen was diagnosed with Sickle Beta Plus Thalassemia disease. I immediately began researching anything and everything I could find on Sickle Cell Disease. Knowing that I carry the sickle cell trait, I never imagined that my child would inherit the disease.

"It was then, during an almost two-week hospital stay, that I began to think about what I could do to help my son — and others affected by Sickle Cell Disease."

That moment of clarity became the foundation for something greater. Tameka Dorsey founded KD Sickle Cell Foundation, Inc. in honor of her son who is living with Sickle Cell Disease. It is a nonprofit organization dedicated to spreading awareness, empowering warriors, and supporting their families.

The foundation began by providing care baskets to children and warriors who were hospitalized, offering ham and turkey boxes to warriors and their families, and hosting annual awareness events with blood drives. Today, we continue building a stronger, more informed, and empowered community for every warrior.

A mother with a purpose, Tameka founded KD Sickle Cell Foundation, Inc. in honor of her son Kylen, who is living with Sickle Cell Disease. Her personal journey through his diagnosis fueled a lifelong commitment to advocacy, awareness, and community support for every warrior and family affected by sickle cell disease.
